5 Signs your Car Needs Cooling System Repair
Within seconds of turning your car on the engine is operating at extremely hot temperatures. Thankfully pioneers of the automotive industry developed a way to keep the engine cool enough to operate without overheating. The cooling system consists of a radiator, fan, thermostat and several other parts. If any of these parts fail your engine will soon begin to operate at extreme temps, which can result in massive damage. If you experience any of the following symptoms of cooling system failure be sure to contact your mechanic right away.
Rising temperature gauge
The first thing you might notice if something is amiss is a rising temperature gauge on your dashboard. If you ever spot the temperature rising into the redzone you ought to pull over and give your car a rest. Contact an auto repair shop to get advice as to whether or not you should continue driving the vehicle.
Smoke coming from the hood
If there is smoke or steam pouring out from under the hood it is likely that your engine is overheating. Pull over as soon as it is safe and legal to do so. Chances are you'll need to add coolant and/or water to the radiator before you'll be able to proceed, if you don't need an actual repair.
Low levels of coolant
From time to time it's important to check your car's coolant level. If it is ever found to be low you will want to have diagnostics completed to find out why. If there is an internal leak that is allowing coolant to be burnt up inside the combustion chamber it will result in the next issue occurring.
White exhaust smoke
If coolant burns up inside the engine and expelled as part of the exhaust it will cause the emissions to be very white. An increase in exhaust smoke, or colored exhaust smoke, should always be a queue to get to the auto shop.
Coolant leaking under the car
If you notice bright green liquid collecting underneath your vehicle then you've just discovered an external coolant leak. This needs to be addressed as soon as possible or else the vehicle will start to overheat, resulting in major engine trouble.
