3 Signs it is time for Engine Repair
The heartbeat of your car comes directly from the engine. Much like human arteries, the engine's innerworkings can become clogged with gunk that cause it to work harder than normal which may eventually cause it to seize up and quit. This issue is usually caused by not providing your car with the necessary oil changes that it deserves, but beware, there are other things that can cause your engine to bite the dust. Be sure to pay attention for these common signs of engine failure, and remember, if you believe you're experiencing any trouble with your vehicle be sure to make an appointment with your local auto repair shop before you need a tow truck!
Knock, Knock, Knock
A knocking noise that occurs under the hood of your car is another lubrication related problem that can result in the need for a complete engine rebuild or replacement. The moving parts of your engine rest on engine bearings and if they become worn out due to improper lubrication, or just because general wear and tear after many thousands of miles on the road, they may begin to rub with other parts and create the knocking noise. This noise will increase and decrease with your RPMs, but it will be quite apparent that there is something going on with your motor that shouldn't be.
Excessive Exhaust Smoke
The smoke that is coming out of your tailpipe can tell you a lot oabout issues that your engine may be having. Depending on the color of the smoke you can generally diagnose what the issue may be. Blue smoke is an indication of an internal oil leak that is allowing for oil to be burnt with the gasoline. This will definitely cause lubrication problems if not dealt with. Black smoke means your car is running rich, in other words it is burning too much gasoline. This increases engine temperature, reduces fuel efficiency and can lead to a multitude of problems. Puffy white smoke tells you there is an internal coolant leak. If coolant is being burnt up in your engine it is not helping to keep the motor cool, and it will definitely lead to overheating!
Loss in Power
After many years of service engines will tire out as parts wear down. This will cause a gradual loss in power, which can be expected, but the better you take care of your car the longer your engine will last. This means completing all scheduled auto maintenance, oil changes and other services that are detrimental to a vehicle's health. If you skip these sorts of services your car is likely going to be headed to the junkyard sooner than later.
Pay attention to the way your car communicates to you. As soon as it begins to tell you there is a problem make an appointment to have it services.
