How Often Should I Change My Oil and Why?
It is commonly understood that you should change your car, truck, van or SUV's oil every 3,000 miles. While this isn't untrue, it isn't true for everyone. Vehicle manufacturers create recommendations for their vehicles about how often different services are needed, including routine maintenance like oil changes. What works for one car may not work for another. Some automakers say that their new vehicles only need oil changes every 10,000 miles, but if you're a heavy commuter you will likely want to come in much sooner than that, or if you don't drive much at all, because standing oil can cause vehicle issues.
The higher the mileage on your vehicle the more often it should be replaced, generally the 3,000 mile marker. However, some mechanics will agree that a regular commuter with average miles on their car can change the oil around every 5,000 miles and their car will perform at it's best capabilities. Your best option is to speak with your local auto mechanic about your car and your driving habits to determine the right oil change interval for your vehicle. But why do we change the oil? Well, here are three reasons to change your oil on time.
Regulate Engine Temperature
New oil is formulated to absorb heat and help regulate engine temperature. As the oil ages and collects the engine grime it loses it's ability to do so. In order to combat overheating be sure to change the oil.
Remove Engine Gunk
Oil that is circulating through the engine collects dirt and dust and other buildup, which causes the oil to gum up slightly, causing the engine to work harder, ultimately reducing your MPGs. When you change the oil the gunk is removed from the engine and when fresh oil is poured into the engine your vehicle will regain it's peak performance.
Of course the most important reason to change the oil is to ensure proper lubrication of the moving engine parts. New oil allows everything to move up and down and side to side with ease, putting less stress on the engine's internal parts as they power you through your commute.
