Squealing Brakes and 4 Other Signs of Brake Trouble

Squealing Brakes and 4 Other Signs of Brake TroubleCan you think of a more important safety system on your car than the brakes? Sure, there are the airbags, seatbelts and safety glass, but these are only important in the event of an accident, they don't do anything to prevent one. Ensuring your vehicle has healthy brakes is the best way not to end up with a scratched bumper, or much worse, for that matter. There are several signs your car may give you if it is time for brake repair, the most common symptom of trouble being a squealing noise that occurs when you hit the brakes.

Grinding or Squealing Brakes

If your brakes grind, howl or squeal it means that your brake pads are almost or completely worn down. Some pads are designed with a small mechanism designed to create the noise prior to your pads completely wearing away. However, if your pads are not equipped with this feature the noise means that metal is grinding on metal and you're car is in dire need of brake repair.

Vibrating

Do you feel a vibration in your brake pedal or steering wheel when you hit the brakes? Does your whole car seem to shake? This is a characterization of warped brake rotors. The rotors are the disc that is bolted to the wheel hub and the piece of the car that the brake pads grab to slow your vehicle. If they are warped it reduces the area in which the pads can grab, greatly hindering your braking ability.

Pulling

When you apply the brakes your vehicle should continue in a straight line with no jerking to the left or right. If this pulling sensation occurs when you slow your vehicle it indicates that there is one of a few problems occurring. The most common issue is uneven wear of the brake pads, however a stuck wheel cylinder or impurities in the brake fluid can also cause this problem.

Low Brake Pedal Pressure

If it seems that the brake pedal needs to be pushed harder and harder in order to get a response from the brakes or if it feels spongy there is a good chance of heavily worn brake pads. This problem can also be caused by more serious issues, such as air in the brake lines or even a brake fluid leak.

ABS Light

Your dashboard has several problem indicator lights that will illuminate if an issue is detected with your car, such as the check engine light. If the ABS, which stands for anti-lock braking system, light comes on, head to the auto repair shop to find out what the problem is and get it taken care of.

Your brakes are your best friend when it comes to a safe ride, so be sure you pay attention to any signs of trouble they may be giving you.
