Common Signs of Suspension Trouble
A healthy suspension will help to ensure smooth and safe driving. When you first suspect that suspension trouble is brewing, you'll want to bring your vehicle to a reputable shop for an inspection. Here's a look at six signs that you need suspension repair.
"Nose Diving" Sensation
When you hit the brakes in a car that has worn-out shocks, it could feel like you're lunging forward at a downward trajectory.
If you can clearly see that the road is smooth, but it feels like you're driving over bumps, then there's reason to be concerned about your suspension's health.
Doesn't Pass the Bounce Test
You can conduct a simple test to help figure out if your shocks/struts have started to fail. To start, make sure that your vehicle is securely parked. Then, go to the front end and press down on it with all of your strength. Rock it a couple times and release. Next, head around to the back of the vehicle and do exactly the same thing on the rear. Upon letting go, if the vehicle rocks more than two or three times, then you should have your suspension inspected.
If you get down and can actually see that oil leaking out onto your shocks, then it's likely time for replacement.
Failing shocks/struts can cause uneven tire wear, which can then lead to the formation of bald spots.
As long as you're adhering to the posted speed limit, it shouldn't feel like you're drifting when going around sharp corners. But if you do get this sensation, then a failing suspension could be to blame.
