Bouncy Ride? It's Time for Suspension Repair
Your vehicle is made up of many systems that work together to provide you with a safe, reliable and comfortable ride. One of the systems, the suspension, plays an integral role in each of those categories. While many people simply associate the suspension as a comfort feature it really does much more. The suspension is tasked with keeping all four wheels on the ground, ensuring adequate braking power when needed, and it also prevents the vehicle from rolling over while cornering. If you ever encounter any of the following telltale signs of suspension failure be sure to get to your local auto repair shop for service right away.
If you believe that your vehicle is tending to bounce up and down while rolling down the street you likely have a suspension issue. You can test your concerns by performing a quick test. Simply push on the hood or trunk of the vehicle to get the car to start bouncing, once you stop pushing the vehicle should return to its normal ride height within 3 to 4 bounces. Any more movement at that and there is a good chance that there are suspension components that need to be replaced.
Oil on the struts
Another way to test your suspension is by running your hand or a rag over the struts, generally visible in the wheel wells. If you find an oily substance it likely means that the casing has cracked or the oil that the struts use to absorb the uneven surface of the road is leaking from a seal. The part will need to be replaced in order to restore proper driveability.
Roll over sensation during cornering
One of the scarier symptoms of trouble is the sensation that your vehicle is going to roll over as you travel around a bend, particularly at higher speeds. This is a result of a failed anti-sway bar. It is very dangerous to operate a vehicle that does not have a properly operating anti-sway bar, as this part is tasked with shifting the vehicle's weight to avoid rollovers and other loss of control while cornering.
One corner of the car appears low
If it appears that one corner of your car is sitting lower than the others but all the tires are properly there is a good chance that the shocks or struts in the corner have grown tired and collapsed on themselves. Driving with this condition will cause your vehicle to drift.
The suspension plays a very important role in your vehicles comfort and safety, so never put off having it fixed should it need to be.
