How do I know if my car needs transmission service?

Whether you drive an automatic transmission, manual transmission, or some sort of tip-tronic hybrid of the two, at some point or another it is going to require routine maintenance. It is important that your vehicle is never denied services it so desperately needs, as without them there are heightened chances of a need for expensive repairs. If you experience any of the following issues be sure to get into the auto shop for general transmission maintenance.

Grinding noises

A common sign that your transmission is due for service is if you notice grinding, squealing or whining noises while shifting. These can occur in both manual and automatic transmission cars and trucks. The noise generally means that there is unwanted metal on metal friction occurring amongst the gears.

Vibrating shifter

To be clear, you shouldn't ever rest your hand on the shifter, as it puts unnecessary tension on the shift fork. However, should you be shifting or otherwise notice that the shifter stick in vibrating extensively (a small amount is normal) you will want to make an appointment for a transmission check up to see what's going on.

Delayed shifting

Automatic transmissions should shift quickly without hesitation. If the engine revs up high while the transmission shifts there is a good chance that the transmission is low on tranny fluid. Routine transmission maintenance should resolve the issue, but if you wait too long to have the problem looked at more extensive damage could occur.

Visible transmission fluid leak

Transmission fluid is generally a reddish color. If you ever find fluid puddling under your vehicle it is very important that you get to the repair shop as soon as possible. No fluids should ever be leaking from your car!

Mileage point

You can likely prevent any of the above issues as long as you have transmission service completed when you're suppose to. For many cars and trucks this falls around every 30,000 miles but be sure to check your owner's manual to find out exactly when your vehicle needs this scheduled auto maintenance.

It is important that you do not put off having transmission trouble checked out at the first sign of trouble, or else you could end up with a much more expensive repair on your hands.
