Is your car in need of a tune up?
All vehicles require scheduled maintenance from time to time to remain in prime operating condition, but for some vehicles, especially as the miles rack up on the odometer, this isn't enough. This is where a tune up comes into play. The term used to refer to simply tuning the carburetor but car's no longer use that part, so the term has evolved right along with vehicles themselves.
What is a tune up?
A tune up generally consists of conducting several small services to restore a vehicle's operating ability. Tune ups are usually completed between scheduled maintenance services, when a car isn't performing as it should.
How do I know if my car needs a tune up
There are many things that may indicate your car could benefit from a tune up. Some of the more common issues include a decrease in fuel efficiency, inability or difficulty to accelerate up to speed, especially when getting on the highway, or a rough idle or stalling.
What services might be done during a tune up?
The following are just a few of the services that an automotive technician may complete during a routine tune up. Talk to your local mechanic about what your car may need.
- Spark plugs & wires - Dirty or corroded spark plugs can cause misfiring, resulting in decreased MPGs and a rough idle.
- Battery services - Battery terminals need to be cleaned to ensure easy starting.
- Air filter - A clogged air filter can prevent the proper amount of air from reaching the combustion chamber. Your car would compensate for this by burning excessive amounts of fuel.
- Fuel filter - If your car's fuel filter is clogged it may struggle for gas, resulting in poor performance.
