Why are Oil Changes so Important?
It seems just a bit strange that some parts of a car can last upwards of 70,000 miles with hardly any service, while others need to be replaced at a much lower mileage point. Unfortunately this is the sort of mentality that ends up resulting in some folks spending thousand of dollars in repair because they kept putting off routine maintenance that their car desperately needed. Oil changes are the most common maintenance service, as they are generally needed every 3,000 to 7,500 miles or so, depending on your year, make and model of vehicle. But why do you need to change the oil so often, when other services are so infrequent?
Removes Engine Grime
As oil circulates through your car's engine it picks up impurities, such as tiny metal particles, dust, dirt and other contaminants that have made their way inside. As all this gunk is collected by the oil it turns to a mud like substance, causing the engine to work harder than normal to create equal power. When the old oil is drained from the engine it brings all the crud out with it, essentially cleaning out the inside of the engine.
Regulates Engine Temperature
While some forms of engine oil are engineered to help regulate the engine temperature by absorbing heat, it actually helps to regulate engine temperature by simply reducing heat production. The lubrication provided by oil prevents metal on metal contact that would otherwise cause an increase in engine operating temperature.
The most important and obvious reason for changing the oil in your car on time is to ensure that all the moving parts of the engine are lubricated as they should be. Without proper levels of oil metal would grind on metal, causing your engine to quickly fall into massive despair, leaving you stranded and likely facing a massive repair bill.
Importance of Preventative Maintenance
It is important to follow your car's scheduled maintenance calendar, which you can find inside the owner's manual. No matter what you drive it will require routine auto maintenance in order to continue running right. Oil changes and other scheduled auto maintenance will reduce the probability of having to spend excessive amounts on unforeseen repairs as well, thus saving you money down the road.
Never put off scheduled auto maintenance, or else your car will end up in need of much larger repairs. If you're due for an oil change in Santa Fe visit Automotive Resources.
